Multi-world and NZ superboat champion Peter Caughey will be racing the world championships after a last-minute sponsorship deal was signed Christmas eve.

"I thought my chances of racing the world champs had gone," an elated Caughey says. "I rang my support sponsor, Motovated Design and Analysis, to tell the guys we wouldn't be racing the champs, and they asked what it'd take to get me there!"

He also rang regular supporter Total motor oils, which also stepped up to the plate to assist.

Caughey crunched the numbers, trimmed the budget, a deal was signed - and the boat was painted with its new name all in time to make Christmas Day's ferry north for the December 27 shakedown races at Wanganui.

The team's heading north on Christmas day to make the international event at the Shelter View track 12km north of Wanganui.

"It's an excellent little track, three of the top Australians coming over for the worlds are using it as a shakedown and two of them are in superboat, taking the Sprintec boats I built out for their first events, so it should be a fantastic race."

With superboats accelerating from 0-130kph in just 2.3 seconds and completing three laps of a tightly twisting course in under a minute - without brakes - it'll certainly be a thrilling day for spectators. The first boat is on the water about 9am, with racing proper from 12 through to 4:30.

"And we'll be there, thanks to Motovated. It supplies world-class mechanical engineering design and analytical services," Caughey says, "and all I can say is they're true to their name; Motovated."

"It all happened very quickly and at a very late stage. If they can help their clients as well as they've helped us it's got to be a great place to do business."
